I met Poppy’s mom, Alissa, through a mom’s group post when I first moved to Los Angeles.  I posted that I was a new photographer and looking for a few families to test out some new ideas and locations.  It’s been tugging at me for a while to offer sessions that are much more genuinely photojournalism focused and so this is one of many to come.  When I first started the idea, I wasn’t sure how long to make the session or how to prep my clients.  For Alissa and Poppy’s session we just went with the flow to see what happened.  And of course it turned out great!

One thing I’ve never been big on with my shoots is really prepping people.  I typically give light directions like “make sure you bring snacks and comfy shoes” but nothing is ever too entirely planned out.  I find this the best approach as it showcases my clients as their “true self”.  And somehow the less we plan, the better it turns out.

Alissa runs a really fun instagram account for Mom’s and I was so excited to meet this duo.  We started the session inside their apartment in Marina Del Ray.   This was so fun as I got a chance to learn about what makes Poppy unique and be able to capture that.  From there we walked over to the Venice Canals to play at one of Poppy’s favorite playgrounds, Linnie Canal Park.   What I truly love about this session is capturing the time that Alissa and Poppy spend at home together.  All those small kisses, hugs, and funny faces are everything we wish we could bottle up and save forever.
