I loved photographing this natural half-day session in Bakersfield. Half-day sessions are my favorite type of family shoot. It really gives me a chance to capture a candid day in the life of each family. Hour long portrait sessions are great too, but a longer session allows for some really natural moments that wouldn’t happen in the course of an hour. It’s nice to capture candid images of families just spending time together.
I like to arrive at a time when the family is starting their day. I met the Yurosek family at their home in Bakersfield. The baby was just waking up from a nap. I captured everybody getting up and getting ready for the shoot and some quiet moments around the house. The Yurosek family owns a pistachio grove and citrus orchard so we wanted to get images on the property. Before we left, we captured some images of the kids playing. Then Dad read the kids a book. After that, we played outside with the dog. Finally, we got in the ATV and drove to the farm. The older son ran around and climbed trees while the baby picked pistachios and oranges. We ended at sunset.
I loved telling the story of how the Yurosek family spends their day to day life together and capture everyday moments that will soon be special memories when the kids are grown. It’s always nice to portraits in unique locations and this one was special because they own a beautiful farm and make memories right on the property. I often find that the day to day activities are the ones families treasure most in later years.
